Technology is Overated?

By Sterling Sanders

Alright, I'm just about as big of a techno fan as the majority of people, and I do think hardware is important, but when choosing a video games system, really its all about the games, I'm mean potential to have the best graphics isn't the same thing as having the best graphics. And games aren't all based on graphics, even though it is an important aspect. The system with the best games wins, PERIOD - that includes graphics, gameplay, popularity, etc.

You can sit there and say "I choose no one system over the other" all day; but if a system has all shitty games, its NOT going to peak your interest, and its not going to be a good system to you. Now if all the systems are good, then fine, but to say that they are all the same is both a travesty to the systems, and a highly incorrect statement. Each one is unique -- you have to realize, strengths and weaknesses for systems are NOT based on technical aspects.

What at one time we don't think would be possible on something with time and effort becomes possible, to say this can't do this or this can't do that just because it wasn't specifically designed with an idea in mind is a falsity. Sure the hardware has an indirect effect on the type of games they'll be able to create; you should be judging the end products, and not what other people what types of features certain types of hardware can do. You shouldn't be running to a specs sheet to decide if you want to buy a system, I'm mean REALLY, you should be running to at least a top ten games list or something, we need to move the focus away from the tech aspects and apply it to where it really, and critically matters, the games.

Of course we like to marvel at technical aspects, but in the end, it doesn't really matter if the games suck - does anyone hear 3DO and jaguar? Right now PS2 has the best games, many people have said so, maybe in the future that will change, then that would mean that another system would be better. The point is not which system is the best, the point is which system YOU think is the best, not which system is the best cause it has the largest numbers before an acronym. You decide which games you like, and what system those games are on will in turn decide which system is best for you at any particular moment.

Right now, I am liking my PS2 the best, that doesn't mean that the others suck, or I'm not playing them, that just means if someone were to ask me, "where could I find the most quality titles?" I'd say PS2, but all of the systems have good games out, its not biased to like one system over another if your reasons are justified, I just don't think technical aspects are worthy of providing that justification; anyway, that was my rant! Hmm.. Think I'll do an editorial on this tomorrow... I might just post this same thing.. hah.. I'm out
